Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) uses electric stimulation of the muscles to relieve pain. Although TENS therapy has traditionally been a pain management treatment, many Georgia Spinal Health & Wellness patients receive TENS therapy as a way of promoting improved wellness.

A TENS machine works by sending electrical impulses directly into the body through electrodes. However, the impulses are low frequency so the sports injury therapy is completely safe. As the nerves are stimulated by the impulses, pain signals to the brain are decreased. Most patients will also experience an increase in the production of endorphins, providing a healthy dose of the body’s natural painkiller.

Common Uses

TENS has a number of useful applications for offering pain relief; however, results will vary depending on the severity of your condition. If you have suffered a back, neck or knee injury then TENS may help you find relief from pain. Many of our patients who suffer from chronic arthritis pain find TENS helps ease their pain.

At Georgia Spinal Health & Wellness, we also use TENS as part of our sports medicine treatments. For many athletes, the therapy speeds up rehabilitation. When an athlete is experiencing less pain, he or she is better able to exercise and build up strength. Without the aid of TENS therapy, this process can take much longer, resulting in the athlete being out of action for longer than they would like.

It is also worth noting that there are ongoing studies on the effectiveness of TENS as a treatment. At Georgia Spinal Health & Wellness, we look forward to using the data from those studies to further improve the treatment options we can offer our patients.
